Al Akhbar: the only serious social journalism in the Arab World?

Al Akhbar has created a new approach to journalism in the Arab World. The pages: politics, society, youth, justice, economy, arts and culture, opinions, international and sports are organized to reflect that. The focus is on social reporting, this is the only daily that covers regularly the news of the poor, and provide class related analysis. The investigative reporting is often excellent, especially Ghassan Saoud.  I have a few criticisms that I shall keep for myself here.

I especially like the economics page: Mohammad Wehbeh writes here about the global price increase of food products, and the expected rise in dairy and animal products of 50% in 2010 and the implications on Lebanon, where this year fruits and vegetables prices peaked due to a combination of weather and cost of production. Beware of the Ramadan price hike!

عادت أسعار السلع الغذائية إلى الارتفاع في الأسواق الخارجية منذ مطلع السنة الجارية. وتشير تقديرات المنظمة العالمية للأغذية «فاو» إلى ارتفاع هائل في أسعار السكّر ومشتقات الحليب، يتوقع أن يصل في نهاية 2010 إلى نحو 48.2% و65% على التوالي... هذا الواقع بدأ يظهر في لبنان، ولا سيما على مستوى مشتقات الحليب المستوردة، وكذلك السلع الأخرى التي تدخل في صناعتها عناصر مستوردة
